Mailing lists

Mailman Lists

  • Mailman lists can be moderated and administered by the list owner via the mailman site.
  • These lists can contain any valid email addresses, they are not restricted to University email addresses.
  • Mailman lists can be set up to allow members to subscribe and unsubscribe via the mailman site.

Mailman lists can be requested via an email to . Any email list created must include the department/faculty name (or a recognisable shortening of the department name) in its email address to indicate to whom the list belongs.

User Configurable Mail Lists

User Configurable Mail Lists (UCML) are email lists which are manually updated by the mail list owner by modifying a text file in their ICT network drive.

  • UCMLs can only be updated by the mailling list owner, users cannot subscribe or unsubscribe themselves.
  • Any email addresses can be added to a UCML, they are not restricted to University of Sydney accounts.
  • UCMLs can not be moderated, anyone who knows the email address for the UCML can send to that address. For this reason emails to UCMLs are usually only sent in the BCC field.

If a UCML email address ends in @usyd.edu.au it must contain the department/faculty name and a hyphen e.g. ict-test@usyd.edu.au. This does not apply to UCML addresses which end in departmental email domains e.g. @ict.usyd.edu.au.

If you would like to arrange for a UCML please contact the ICT Helpdesk.

MCS Exchange Distribution Lists

Exchange Distribution Lists can be created on the MCS Exchange server to provide group emails within departments which have been migrated to the MCS Exchange email environment.

  • Exchange Distribution Lists can only contain recipients whose email accounts are on the MCS Exchange server.
  • Lists of this nature can be protected in a number of ways, such as ensuring that only specific people are able to send to the list, or that the list of members is not visible to the world.
  • Exchange Distribution Lists allow a list Manager to be set, who can edit membership using the Address Book in Microsoft Outlook.

If you would like more information or would like to request an MCS Exchange Distribution List please contact the ICT Helpdesk
